Shaping Downtown LA: Los Angeles Secures Future as Global Event Hub with LACC Modernization
By BCN News Desk
Los Angeles is taking a definitive step to reclaim its position at the forefront of the global conventions market. Following a vote by the Los Angeles City Council, the city officially approved the long-anticipated Expansion and Modernization Project for the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC). The decision locks in a massive public infrastructure commitment designed to drive regional economic growth and elevate Downtown Los Angeles into a premier destination for international conventions, expos, and major events.

Closing the Gap on Global Competition
For years, Los Angeles faced a notable handicap when competing against rival metropolitan centers for top-tier national and international gatherings. The lack of a single contiguous exhibit space meant major organizers were forced to look elsewhere.
The newly approved design directly resolves this hurdle by bridging the gap between the existing South and West Exhibit Halls. By introducing 190,000 square feet of contiguous hall space, the facility will feature a single uninterrupted exhibit center spanning over 750,000 square feet. To accommodate modern event requirements, the project also incorporates 39,000 square feet of meeting space and 95,000 square feet of flexible multipurpose space.
“An expanded and modernized Convention Center will transform the landscape of Downtown Los Angeles for following generations,” noted Kimberly Weedmark, General Manager of the LA Convention Center. “This project will allow us to increase the number of top-tier programs that we welcome to Los Angeles while granting our current clients continued growth opportunities.”
Boosting the Regional Economy
The financial impact of the project extends beyond convention halls. City forecasts estimate that the construction and expanded operations will generate over 15,000 jobs and contribute an extra $652 million to the City’s General Fund over the next 30 years. Furthermore, increased delegate activity is anticipated to yield over $150 million annually in direct visitor spending across regional hotels, restaurants, transportation networks, and retail establishments.
