What is Engagement?
Why is engagement important?
I remember when I was in school. I loved my French class, the lessons were fun, my teacher made it easy to learn, and I was speaking and writing the language quite nicely.
My third year, my French teacher left my school, and we got a new teacher.
This where I learned the importance of the environment I worked in and how the way I was taught impacted the results of me learning.
I didn’t feel I was connected to the subject, or the new teacher. I lost interest and my grades fell, and I went from an A-Grade student to a C – Grade student during the year.
My new teacher didn’t understand why I was doing so bad, and she spoke to me, and I couldn’t explain.
Nothing changed, and I stumbled through the classes, and I passed with a C.
I was disengaged.
The word Engaged, has become more frequently used in recent times in business, and the consequences of having a disengaged workforce or Chanel, is much more serious than me struggling in French Class.
When someone is engaged in a function , a job or project, you can see the enthusiasm to succeed, and drive results that will impact them as individuals, and the greater cause of who they are representing.
But to get to this, you need make sure you have the formula for engagement.
- Knowledge
- Communication
- Resources
- Development
- Performance
- Execution
- Recognition
- Reward
The only caveat I would say is, if you don’t have the right people in place that want to succeed, then the above components won’t matter.
We will go into these elements in more detail later, but one thing I know is that if you can focus the minds of all your participants in your business, and give them reasons to succeed and motivate them you can get engagement with your business, products or services.
When I was a young executive, I learned the process of “Flow”, and the consequences of having a project or experience that an individual goes through that made complete sense, and the process felt natural because of the way they were being led through various components which took them to the end of the process, with a result.
Engagement is a series of processes that if designed with “Flow” in mind can exponentially change your business.
Engagement is the choice of the participant, so it is essential that you design your program/ project or campaign with that in mind. If the participant does not adopt your initial invitation to take part then you have lost them at the start. If your program does not keep the participant moving forward with consistent messaging then they will lose interest and move onto another project.
What is interesting, is that participants if they find something they feel is natural they will thrive and make it part of their regular schedule. That is engagement.
The business World has changed in the past couple of years, and with Remote / Hybrid models being put into place, individuals are looking for ways to connect to a purpose, and have meaningful engagement with topics and projects that make their daily life rewarding from physical monetary rewards to recognition from their managers and colleagues.
